Patrol Leader

Job Description:
• The Patrol Leader is elected by the patrol and leads the patrol.

Qualifications:
• At least 1st Class Scout

Reports to:
• The Senior Patrol Leader

Adult Mentor(s):
• Patrol Assistant Scoutmaster (PASM) and Scoutmaster

Patrol Leader duties:
• Plan and lead patrol meetings and activities.
• Keep patrol members informed.
• Assign each patrol member a job and help them succeed. For example, Assistant Patrol Leader,
Patrol Scribe, Patrol Quartermaster.
• Represent the patrol at all Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC) meetings and at the annual program
planning conference.
• Prepares the patrol to take part in all troop activities.
• Develop patrol spirit.
• Regularly attends troop meetings, troop campouts, and troop events during his service period.
• Work with other troop leaders to make the troop run well.
• Know what patrol members and other leaders can do.
• Set the example.
• Proudly and correctly wear the Scout uniform per the BSA standards (complete Field uniform for
all Troop meetings, consisting of tucked and buttoned Scout shirt with current insignia, pants,
belt, socks, neckerchief and slide).
• Live by the Scout Oath and Law.
• Show Scout spirit.
• Meet the Performance and Advancement Expectations for this Position of Responsibility.

Performance and Advancement Expectations:
• Attend at least 80% of all Troop meetings.
• Attend at least 80% of all meetings of the PLC, and ensure the Patrol is represented at 100% of
all meetings of the PLC.
• Attend at least 80% of all campouts.
• Attend Troop Leader Training, even if you have attended in the past.
• Have a Patrol Flag.
• Have a Patrol Yell.
• Have the Patrol’s insignia on the Patrol’s action packer and other Patrol equipment.
• In any 3 consecutive month period following election:
1. Have at least 2 Patrol Members advance in rank, and
2. Have the Patrol participate in at least 2 Good Turns or service projects approved in
advance by the PLC.
3. Have 8 members in the Patrol or increase Patrol membership over the previous
three months.
• Have at least 75% of the Patrol proudly and correctly wear the Scout uniform per the BSA
standards at all Troop meetings, Courts of Honor and campouts. (complete Field uniform
consisting of tucked and buttoned Scout shirt with current insignia, pants, belt, socks, neckerchief
and slide).
• Supervise the Patrol in conducting a “Stop, Start, Continue” assessments at least once per month
during Patrol meetings.
• During the first Patrol meeting following each meeting of the PLC, review the Troop program for
the next month with the Patrol, plan the Patrol’s participation in the following month’s program in
detail; assign responsibilities to members of the Patrol for each program item and discuss the 2
month additional look ahead with the Patrol.
• Have attendance taken at each Patrol Meeting and report the names of those Patrol members
whom have missed 2 consecutive Patrol Meetings to the SPL and/or the ASPL for Membership.
• Coordinate with the ASPL for Advancement and Training to ensure each Patrol member
advances or will advance in rank at least once per year, and that any Patrol members under First
Class rank attain First Class within one year of joining the Troop.
• For each campout, prepare a written duty roster and post it in a conspicuous location.
• Have read and have a copy of the Patrol Leader Handbook.
• Have read, signed and has a copy of Troop Leadership Agreement.
• Meet with the SM or his designee to establish your written advancement plan for the leadership
term. The Troop will provide you with an opportunity to sign up for, and complete merit badges
consistent with your obligations as a Scout Leader. The Troop will enable you to complete them
either on your own or in a merit badge class setting at a time consistent with the Troop’s Five
year Plan.
• Schedule monthly Scoutmaster Conferences with PASM after election (approximately every 30
days) to review progress on advancement and performance of leadership position. Additional
Scoutmaster Conferences are encouraged. Advancement in rank is approved or deferred by the
Scoutmaster after Scoutmaster Conference.
• Maintain your service record for this Position of Responsibility for use in all Scoutmaster
Conferences.
• At the end of your term, return the copy of the Patrol Leaders Handbook issued to you by the
Troop.

Scribe

Job Description:

The scribe is the Troop’s secretary and helps to keep records of meetings and attendance.

Reports to:

The Assistant Senior Patrol Leader for Membership

Scribe duties:

1. Though not a voting member, attends meetings of the patrol leaders’ council and keeps a record of
the discussions.
2. Attend and keep a log of patrol leaders’ council meetings.
3. Cooperates with the patrol leaders to record attendance at troop activities, including Troop
meetings and Court of Honors, and to maintain troop advancement records.
4. Communicate highlights from the PLC to the Troop Committee Chairman to share at the Troop
Committee meeting
5. Work with the Troop News Chair to ensure notices for the PLC meetings, and key data is
published in the Troop News
6. Set a good example
7. Proudly and correctly wear the Scout uniform per the BSA standards
8. Demonstrate highest level of Scout Spirit. Be focused and involved during scout activities
9. Limit personal, social activities during scout events
10. Lives by the Scout Oath and Law
11. Works cooperatively with ASPLs

Prerequisites:

• The Scout must at least be First Class rank
• Completed Troop Leadership Training (or commit to complete during term)

Performance and Advancement Expectations:

• Attend at least 75% of Troop meetings, campouts and Court of Honors during term, unless
excused by Scoutmaster.
• Unless excused in the monthly evaluation
o Attend weekly Troop Meetings in a field or activity uniform
o Attend Courts of Honor
o Attend Troop Campouts
o Attend PLC/Green Bar meetings during tenure
o Attend all Scout Staff preparation meetings and activities prior to a Campout.
• Have read, signed and has copy of Troop Leadership Position Agreement.
• Meet with the SM or his designee to establish your written advancement plan for the leadership
term. The Troop will provide an opportunity to sign up for, and complete merit badges consistent
with your obligations as a Scout Leader.
• Maintain your service record for this Position of Responsibility for use in all Scoutmaster
Conferences.
• Schedule and complete regular leadership conferences after appointment (approximately every 60
days) to review progress, performance, credit and plan for the performance of the leadership
position.

Senior Patrol Leader

Troop Guide

Job Description:

The Troop Guide is the de facto Patrol Leader for the FCT Patrol.

Reports to:

Assistant Senior Patrol Leader of FCT
Patrol Assistant Scoutmaster (PASM)

Duties:

1. Introduces new Scouts to troop and patrol operations.
2. Guides new Scouts to avoid harassment by older Scouts.
3. Helps the patrol learn to resolve basic problems entirely within the patrol, or in more
extreme cases, escalating to the PLC or appropriate adult.
4. Helps new Scouts earn First Class rank in their first year.
5. Coordinates with the ASPL(s) in charge of the First Class Trail program to stay on the
Troop’s schedule or to arrange for any needed requirements to be covered in make-up
sessions.
6. Teaches basic Scout skills.
7. Coaches the patrol leader of the New Scout Patrol on his duties.
8. Works with the patrol leader at patrol leaders’ council meetings.
9. Attends patrol leaders’ council meetings with the patrol leader of the New Scout Patrol.
10. Assists the assistant Scoutmaster with training and confirms when scout requirements
have been performed satisfactorily for sign-off.
11. Counsels individual Scouts on Scouting challenges.
12. Coordinates with other Troop Guides for use of shared resources.
13. Sets a good example.
14. Enthusiastically and correctly wears the Scout uniform (all four parts).
15. Lives by the Scout Oath and Law.
16. Shows Scout spirit

Prerequisites:

• Star rank or above
• Camping Merit Badge
• NYLT required
Instructor or Patrol Leader experience highly recommended
The Scoutmaster may evaluate exceptions to these prerequisites on a case-by-case basis.

Performance and Advancement Expectations:

Troop Guide duties are ongoing until the new scout patrol has been absorbed into one or
more of the mixed-age permanent patrols.
• Have read, signed and kept a copy of Troop Leadership Agreement.
• Meet with the SM or his designee to establish your written advancement plan for the
leadership term.
• Maintain your service record for this Position of Responsibility for use in all Scoutmaster
Conferences.
• Schedule and complete monthly leadership Conferences after appointment
(approximately every 30 days) to review progress, performance, credit and plan for the
performance of the leadership position.
• Unless otherwise excused, a Troop Guide will:
• Attend weekly troop and patrol meetings.
• Attend all troop campouts.
• Camp with the new Scout patrol.
• Attend FCT Advancement Sessions.
• Attend PLC meetings.
