Overview
For FCT the focus of this campout will centered around the Second Class 5-mile hike requirement.
Be sure to pack the BSA Outdoor Essentials with emphasis on:
- Compass
- Rain Gear
- Water (two quarts)
- Trail Snacks
We will work on all the following requirements:
- Compass Work
- SC-3a
- Demonstrate how a compass works and how to orient a map.
- Use a map to point out and tell the meaning of five map symbols.
- SC-3b
- Using a compass and map together, take a 5-mile hike.
- SC-3d
- Demonstrate how to find directions during the day and at night without using a compass or an electronic device.

- Hiking Hazards
- SC-3c
- Describe some hazards or injuries that you might encounter on your hike and what you can do to prevent them.

- Wild Animal Identification
- SC-4
- Identify or show evidence of at least 10 kinds of wild animals (such as birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, or mollusks) found in your local area or camping location. You may show evidence by tracks, signs, or photographs you have taken.

- Native Plant Identification

- Identify or show evidence of at least 10 kinds of native plants found in your local area or campsite location. You may show evidence by identifying fallen leaves or fallen fruit that you find in the field, or as part of a collection you have made, or by photographs you have taken.

- Explain each of the principles of Tread Lightly! And tell how you practiced them on a campout or outing.

- Demonstrate a practical use of the square knot.

- Demonstrate a practical use of the taut-line hitch.

Meals
Friday Dinner
- Eat a full meal before arriving at Double Lake Recreation Area
Saturday Breakfast
- Hot Water will be provided
- For Hot Chocolate (Bring your Own)
- For Oatmeal (Bring your Own)
- Cereal/Snack bars (Bring your Own)
Saturday Lunch
- Pack a sack lunch
- Avoid items that require refrigeration
- Do not pack drinks other than your full water bottles
- No sodas
- No glass
Saturday Dinner
- Scouts will be cooking their own meals using silver turtles primarily prepared at home by the scouts
- Prepare at home by selecting and purchasing ingredients and cutting them to appropriate size
- Bag the ingredients (veggies in one bag, protein in another)
- Be sure to include a small amount of seasoning (salt & pepper, lemon pepper, Tony Chachere’s, etc) if the scout desires
- The scouts will assemble their silver turtles at the campsite, using provided heavy duty foil.
- Add water to pouch
Sunday Breakfast
- Hot Water will be provided
- For Hot Chocolate (Bring your Own)
- For Oatmeal (Bring your Own)
- Cereal/Snack bars (Bring your Own)
Snacks Through out the Weekend
- Scout should bring his own snacks for the campout
- Fruit, snack bars, trail mix
- Avoid candy and other sugary snacks
